FM Smith wins Robert Wheeler Chess Open 2025
FM Shreyas Smith won the Open section of the IA CM Robert Wheeler Chess Championship held at the Liguanea Chess Club June 7-8, 2025. Second place went to FM Raheem Glaves, Javene McGowan was third, the veteran Michael Diedrick fourth, with Camperdown High School student Taniel Barrett rounding out the top five places.
“This is a great win for FM Smith, who consistently does well in our Open events. [There were] approximately 131 participants up from 126 the previous year took part in this event,” said Jamaica Chess Federation Council member Richard Shaw.
In the Under-17 section Wolmerian Zuberi Edwards won from Dr Shawn Allen, while Kingston College’s Jaiden Williams placed third, CKLA Emilia-Rose Leake fourth and Luke Wright rounding out the top five places.
Emilia-Rose Leake was the top female in the U-17 section.
In the Under-14 Absolute section Pitterson Chess Institute Aundrae Chang Jr won from the pair of Legendary Chess Academy’s Pratham Rishwanth and Ariana-Marie Daniels, AISK Taisin Saito fourth, Hopefield Prep’s Ryder Darby fifth. In the U-14 Girls’ section Denbigh High Cordelia Wilson won from R&D Chess Academy’s Kalie Cummings, Clarendon Elite Chess Kids Jessica Hemans was third, Abichail Solomon fourth, and CAP Chess Academy’s Natalya Hinds rounding out the top five places.
This annual chess event is named in honour of the late Jamaican Chess International representative, Jamaica Chess Federation Secretary, International Arbiter and Candidate Master (CM) Robert Wheeler.
