One-bedroom apartment hit with massive JPS bill
Dear Claudienne,
I am seeking your assistance on behalf of a KF, a visually impaired person. KF has received this ridiculous bill from the JPS for $85,411.84 for the billing period August 6, 2024 to September 5, 2024. Please can you help him by reaching out to the JPS on his behalf.

When contacted, KF told Tell Claudienne that there had been a steep increase in his electricity bills since the JPS installed a smart meter at his apartment in July 2024.
KM told the column that a detached retina problem had caused him to be visually impaired.
He said that he was baffled by the high electricity bill as he only had a refrigerator and two fans in his one-bedroom apartment.
On October 14, 2024 Tell Claudienne requested the JPS to investigate and clarify the reasons for the steep increase in the electricity bills.
The JPS visited the apartment on February 26, 2025 and has informed the column that the increase in the electricity bills stemmed from the age of the refrigerator that has been in use for 18 years.
Meanwhile, until the refrigerator can be upgraded, an electrician told Tell Claudienne that you should check the door seals of the refrigerator, If the seals are worn or loose they could be causing energy loss, he said.
