R Kelly hospitalised after ‘forced’ overdose, lawyers claim
R Kelly’s lawyers are alleging that he was given an overdose of medication by prison staff, which led to his hospitalisation for two days.
According to a June 17 filing obtained by USA TODAY, after being placed in solitary confinement, Kelly was given an “overdose quantity” of medication on June 12 compared to his normal anxiety and sleep medication dosages, leading to his hospitalisation on Friday, June 13.
The lawyers further allege that the 58-year-old was forcibly removed from Duke University Hospital in North Carolina “against medical advice”, the report said.
The R&B artist has been serving a 30-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute facility in Butner for racketeering and sex trafficking since 2022.
The lawyers claim that Kelly was placed in solitary confinement “against his will” prior to the incident. This, they said, followed an emergency motion for his release from prison last week in which the team claimed three Bureau of Prisons officials allegedly devised a plot to have Kelly killed by another inmate.
The Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on “pending litigation”, the report added.
