WATCH: Capleton performs to sold-out audience in Guadeloupe on Father’s Day
Firebrand dancehall deejay Capleton says it is always a joy for him to perform in Guadeloupe.
On Sunday, which was celebrated as Fathers’ Day, the artiste delivered an explosive performance at Palais des Sports du Gosier, a venue which accommodates 5,000 patrons. The venue was jam packed with patrons who grooved to hits like Tun it Up, Tour, Wings a Di Morning, That Day Will Come and Who You Calling Nigger among other treats from his catalogue.
“I have performed in Guadeloupe five times now and this was another sold out performance. The first time that I went to Guadeloupe, I remember that it rained heavily at the mini stadium that the show was being held. The rain held up and I performed for 1 hour and 20 minutes and it was a packed venue. Every time I’ve been back it’s the same reception and all sold out venues and high energy. This time was just as special as the others,” Capleton told Observer Online on Tuesday.
He added, “What I enjoy most about being in Guadeloupe is that it reminds me so much of Jamaica. I see ackee trees, breadfruit trees and other fruit trees that are also in Jamaica. I also enjoy the love from the fans. It’s always a joy performing there.”
Reflecting on the significance of Fathers’ Day, Capleton said he called his father and showed his appreciation to him.
“My father’s name is Dudley Bailey, and I called him and greeted him with love. He is now 86 years old and that’s an important milestone. We have a bredrin kind of relationship and I can talk to him about anything happening in my life. During my performance in Guadeloupe, I gave a shout out to all the fathers and I also performed my song Mama and Papa,” said Capleton.
He credits his father for his early interest in music.
“My best childhood memory of my father is that he used to carry me everywhere with him and he had a turntable and he used to let me play his records,” Capleton disclosed.
Capleton has not released a full body of work since 2010’s I-Ternal Fire. He says new music is definitely coming this year.
“My upcoming album will be produced by a label out of Switzerland. I have a monster collaboration on the album with Damian and Stephen Marley. Dennis Brown is also featured on one of the tracks. We may end up with about 15 tracks on the album and we are looking to release it in a few months with a fiery title,” Capleton shared.
Capleton’s forthcoming performances include the Afrodom Festival in Paris, Reggaeland in the United Kingdom and Sunsplash Reggae in Holland.
