Busy Signal marks KFC’s 50th
As the sun set on the location that houses the first KFC Jamaica location, internationally renowned dancehall artiste Busy Signal brought the climax to an epic day of celebrations for the iconic eatery which celebrated its 50th anniversary on Wednesday.
It was a day of beautiful chaos as Jamaica’s chicken craze soared to new heights. In what many described as one of the most iconic displays of loyalty, customers joined long lines and waited for several hours for the chance to score two-piece meal deal combo for free chicken with the purchase of a three-piece meal.
They came for the chicken but were treated to a day full of entertainment and giveaways as the Old Hope Road location buzzed with excitement.
As the music blared from speaker boxes, dancers adorned in the restaurant’s 50th celebration T-shirts kept energies high. There was never a dull moment as clean choreography and some nail-biting acrobatic moves had customers fully entertained.
Many put their cars in park and alighted from their vehicles to get closer to the action. Smartphones in hand, they fully immersed themselves in the festivities, totally losing track of time.
Busy Signal graced the stage towards the end of the celebrations bringing with him his usual high energy and freestyling lyrics. His ability to change the words of some of his biggest hits to suit the celebratory occasion delighted the crowd.
Letting out screams and cheers, they soaked up every tune as Busy Signal heaped praises on KFC, dubbing them the island’s premier fast-food location.
“We love KFC and we nah sell out,” Busy Signal sang, changing the words of his popular Jamaica Love single. That was enough to get the crowd riled up, so much so the entertainer had to rewind. “Tell we ‘bout the wings we always buy out. Nuh matter whether yaad or abroad, KFC, we represent Jamaica.”
The cheers got even louder as he segued into his Happy Birthday track. Congratulating KFC on 50 years, the entertainer pushed the mic into the crowd as he sang, “KFC, happy birthday yah me fren, one more year pan dem.”
The entertainer expressed joy at being able to join in on the celebrations, recalling his days as a youth growing up in Kintyre and enjoying KFC meals on special occasions. He toasted the eatery for being a part of countless milestone moments for many Jamaicans.
“Big birthday bash. The whole Jamaica inna frenzy right now,” Busy Signal charged.
His sentiments were shared by Tina Matalon, marketing director at Restaurants of Jamaica Ltd /KFC & Pizza Hut.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Matalon thanked Jamaicans for their outpouring of support over the past 50 years as she expressed happiness at KFC’s inclusion in many Jamaican households.
“We knew the support would be tremendous because Jamaicans have loved KFC for 50 years, and so we wanted to give back, and we thought what they would want most would be some chicken. We’ve never quite done a deal as aggressive as this and so we expected some crowd, but this has been an overwhelming outpour of love and support, and it shows exactly how Jamaica feels about KFC,” she said. “We have been consistent and we have created a brand that is like family now. It is enriched in Jamaica’s culture. We’re not just selling food, we’re involved in communities, sports, music, just about everything. We love Jamaica and so that loyalty and love as you’ve seen is a two-way street.”
The day also saw a performance from Christopher Martin.
