Supreme Ventures Trophy headlines Saturday’s race card at Caymanas Park
Caymanas Park will come alive on Saturday with the running of the Supreme Ventures 24th Anniversary Trophy, a Grade I (Graded Stakes/Open Allowance) sprint over six furlongs, headlining a competitive race card in celebration of Supreme Ventures Limited’s 24 years in the gaming industry.
It was nearly a quarter of a century ago that SVL took over operations from the Jamaica Lottery Company, and since March 2017, they’ve expanded their portfolio to include the promotion of live horse racing under a lease agreement with the government-owned Caymanas Track Limited.
This year’s feature event has attracted a quality field of six sprinters, including five imports, highlighting the ongoing dominance of foreign-bred horses at the top level. The lone locally bred entrant, Fearless Soul, faces a stiff challenge against the likes of Legacy Isle (USA), Champion Bubbler (USA), Digital One (USA), Wall Street Trader (USA), and Chocomo (USA).
Legacy Isle (USA), trained by Rohan Crighton and to be partnered again with leading rider Raddesh Roman, enters the race off an impressive front-running victory in the Harlequinn Trophy on May 31. Carrying top weight, he dominated that five-furlong straight event and comfortably held off Champion Bubbler (USA) by nearly five lengths. A repeat performance would make him the horse to beat.
However, Digital One (USA) looks poised to provide the strongest challenge. The consistent filly, trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by promising 9lb claimer Emelio McLean, boasts a record of seven wins and eight placings from 16 starts. She showed plenty of grit in the Eros Trophy on June 7, when she nearly lasted the seven-furlong trip, just caught by Tiz Tok (USA) late.
Wall Street Trader (USA), who also competed in the Eros Trophy, made a bold bid in the stretch but faded to third. With a 15lb rise in weight this time around, trainer Rohan Mathie and jockey Shane Richardson will be hoping for a sharp break and a well-judged ride to offset the handicap.
Champion Bubbler (USA), known for her straight-course success, returns with something to prove and should not be overlooked, while both Fearless Soul and Chocomo (USA), recently promoted to this class, add a layer of intrigue as they test themselves against more seasoned rivals.
With conditions set for a fast and competitive sprint, Digital One (USA) may be primed to turn the tables on Legacy Isle and secure a memorable anniversary win for her connections.
