RADA, Sandals, and partners, honour ‘fathers who farm’
WITH June being recognised as National Men’s Health Awareness Month, last Friday a number of entities came together for an event in honour of the men who rise with the sun and work the land — farming fathers.
Organised by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), with support from the Ministry of Health, Sandals resorts in the Montego Bay region, and Caribbean Chemicals and Agencies (Jamaica) Limited, the event — held just ahead of Father’s Day — aimed to recognise and celebrate the essential roles men play in farming, family life and community development.
According to Zana Ryman, parish social services home economics assistant at RADA (St James), the event — the first of its kind — was meant to highlight the contributions of farming fathers while promoting awareness around men’s physical, mental and emotional well-being.
“Through health checks, motivational presentations and acts of recognition, this event sought to raise awareness about men’s health, emphasise their impact within the agricultural sector, and foster a culture of appreciation for their dedication and hard work,” Ryman said.
Held at the RADA complex in Catherine Hall, St James, the event welcomed stalwarts of the agricultural community.
Throughout the day, participants received a range of health services, including body mass index, (BMI) screenings, blood pressure checks, eye exams, prostate tests, and well-deserved spa treatments. These wellness activities provided the perfect backdrop for an informative and engaging luncheon featuring a series of presentations.
The presenters included Clifton Morris, regional prevention manager at the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA), who encouraged attendees to avoid substance abuse and prioritise their mental and physical health; and Angelica Reid, health promotion and education officer at the Ministry of Health, who discussed the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise.
In the meantime Seba McLaughlin, senior inspector at the Pesticides Control Authority, shared best practices for the safe and proper use of pesticides; while Michael Mosley, agricultural programme coordinator at Montego Bay Community College (MBCC), provided practical advice on creating a sustainable future for farming and bridging the generational gap in the agricultural sector.
These presentations were followed by a special awards ceremony honouring the farmers for their years of service to both the land and their families, underscoring the values of resilience, humility and care that define their lives.
Each farmer received an appreciation bag and a certificate of recognition from RADA. In addition, Sandals resorts in the Montego Bay region donated essential farming tools—including garden hoses, shovels, machetes, sprayers and water boots.
“Farming isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life,” said Rochelle Forbes-Reid, regional public relations manager at Sandals.
“These farming fathers carry generations of wisdom and sacrifice and we’re honoured to take this moment to say thank you,” added Forbes-Reid.
Two outstanding farmers, Fabian Williams and Barrington Morris, were awarded luxury-included day passes for two at Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay.
