Michelle Wilson-Reynolds’ Orchid Haven (Part 2)
Style Observer Gardening (SOG) continues its trek
through the garden of strategic marketing consultant Michelle Wilson-Reynolds, where she boasts a vast collection of orchids as well as other species of plants which have provided pride and therapy over the last 20 years.
Wilson-Reynolds achieved her impressive catalogue through dedication, learning from both successes and setbacks — a level of care that others must diligently apply for similar results.
“Over the years, I have come to appreciate more and more that gardening is more than daily watering. For me, I have taken the time to carefully observe my plants and flowers even when they look healthy, because sometimes they may need repotting due to becoming root-bound. In the case of the orchids, there may be early signals of waterlog or the start of root rot, even when there are blooms,” Wilson-Reynolds said. “One also must carefully assess if particular plants or orchids are getting too much or not enough sun and or course, keep a keen eye out for pests and diseases and act quickly.
All the effort she has invested in her garden, yields a profound reward: A cherished sanctuary.
“My garden is my happy place, it’s my place of solitude. It brings me joy and much happiness on an ongoing basis. It’s my means of self-therapy,” she added.
For those eager to start their own collection, Wilson-Reynolds has sound advice. “Decide on the plants you love and your ability to care for them. Don’t be tempted to consider the garden you create as a static thing at the start. It will evolve as you discover new plants and are inspired over time,” Reynolds said. “Start with a budget and take time to expand as you go along as it can become an expensive addiction.”
