WATCH: Mayor Swaby says KSAMC ready for hurricane season
KINGSTON, Jamaica — With drain cleaning and other preparations underway, Mayor Andrew Swaby says the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is ready for the hurricane season.
“The KSAMC is ready…Right now, we have done our readiness report, and we are out in the field making sure we have the proper data so we can implement the recommendations,” Swaby said.
He added, “In May…we checked our state of readiness where we invited all the relevant agencies to the KSAMC and they have given a report on their state of readiness. The KSAMC itself has started to conduct their drain cleaning investigations, where we establish the critical drains and having established the critical drains, we put a price to it.”
This activity, Swaby said, will be followed by the actual cleaning of the drains in the municipality.
Meanwhile, the mayor said the KSAMC’s disaster coordinator has been tasked with identifying flood-prone areas for cleaning.
Noting that the KSAMC has identified the shelters for the season, Swaby said the municipality will also be conducting training for shelter managers in anticipation of a disaster.
