New Trelawny festival queen to serve homeless for parish project
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — On Saturday, social worker Dalian Watson bested a field of five other contestants to grab the coveted 2025 Trelawny Festival Queen crown.
She declared that she was confident of finishing high in the field but tempered her expectations about winning.
“I knew I wanted to be in the top three. I worked hard, and I am a winner now. My expectations [were] to basically just to do my best, to grow — in which I did — and just to showcase what I am all about. I am humbled, I am elated, and I am just grateful to God,” declared Watson speaking after her triumph in the annual competition at the Artisan Village on the Falmouth Pier on Saturday night.
The 25-year-old not only took home the crown, she also took sectional awards for best performance, most culturally aware, most active in the community, and most popular on social media.
Her performance piece, a skit dubbed Miss Dippy, received a strong response from the crowd, and Watson was the clear favourite throughout the event.
Tyra Bucknor and Selena Agnus were crowned first and second runners-up, respectively.
Bucknor was awarded the sectional prize of most poised while Agnus was voted winner of the most congenial prize.
Watson indicated that she plans to provide support to the homeless community as part of her parish activities.
“My parish project is a feeding programme for the homeless as well as families where[by] we will go into the different communities,” said Watson.
“I will be going into the communities and distributing care packages as I know that a lot of families lack one of the basic necessities, which is food,” she added.
According to Watson, she will be seeking to work with several stakeholders to make this project a reality, given the group that she has targeted.
“I also want to have a fixed place in which we can actually issue food to the homeless,” said Watson who has been employed to the Ministry of Labour and and Social Security for the last three years.
She said her work at the ministry pushed her in the direction of her project.
Watson will now represent Trelawny at the national Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition final scheduled for August 2 in the Corporate Area.
“My expectations are just to grow from that experience as well, to do my endeavour best, to trust God and, hopefully, with God’s strength to be in the top three as well,” said Watson.
