VETERAN Jamaican trainer Gary Subratie enjoyed a landmark moment in his career on Saturday, June 21, 2025, when he saddled his first winner at the prestigious Gulfstream Park racetrack in Florida in the United States.
The victory came in the sixth race of the day, a maiden claiming event run over 1 1/16 miles where
Rogers Park, trained by Subratie and ridden by jockey Yolber Torres, produced a strong performance to land top honours. Speaking after the win, a visibly elated Subratie described the achievement as a pivotal step in his international ambitions.
“This is a big moment for me,” he said “It’s my second stint training here at Gulfstream and to finally get a winner means a lot. I’m hoping this is just the beginning and that I can keep building from here.”
Subratie also expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received, both from fans in Jamaica and from individuals in the Gulfstream Park community, including renowned track announcer Pete Aiello who has long been a friend to Jamaica’s racing fraternity.
The trainer also acknowledged the long-standing partnership with owner Trevor James who has played a central role in Subratie’s success, both at home and now overseas.
“I can’t put into words how much Mr James has supported me through the years,” said Subratie. “He’s been a constant in my career, and it means everything to have him here at Gulfstream as we start this new chapter together.”
Subratie currently manages a five-horse string at Gulfstream Park, which includes a pair of seasoned runners and three developing two-year-olds. Both older horses featured on Saturday’s card, underscoring the trainer’s active presence at one of North America’s top racing venues. With his first win under his belt Subratie is optimistic about what lies ahead as he continues to make his mark on the international stage.
