Fireworks in the USA as Club World Cup round of 16 kicks off

The heat, along with big teams, means there will be fireworks in the USA as the Club World Cup round of 16 kicks off this weekend with European giants Benfica and Chelsea squaring off on Saturday, then on Sunday, reigning European champions PSG will battle MLS kings Inter Miami.

Event # 1 – Club World CUP — Benfica vs Chelsea – 3:00 PM

Benfica is one of the biggest clubs in Portugal and Europe, but not many expected them to advance from the group stage of the competition. However, they surprised many by winning their group, beating Bayern Munich one nil in their final group match to snatch the top spot. Indeed, Benfica arrived in the USA in pretty decent form, having two wins, two draws, and one loss in their previous five games in all competitions. Having failed to lift the Portuguese Premier title in the just-concluded campaign, which was won by Sporting Lisbon, Benfica will be aiming to lift the Club World Cup title to end their season in style. They opened the tournament with a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Boca Juniors, four draws in a row in all competitions in normal time, but they ended that run by beating Auckland and Bayern Munich, which extended their unbeaten run to 16 games in all competitions, in normal time.

Chelsea, on the other hand, finished second in their group, behind group winners Flamengo, who thrashed them 3-1 in the group stage. With that said, Chelsea, who were beaten by Newcastle in their final domestic league match back in May, have now won five of their last six overall matches in all competitions — four of those wins came with clean sheets. Indeed, Chelsea has been impressive in front of goals, scoring 12 times in their last five matches, and will be aiming to continue that trend against Benfica as they look to secure a quarter-final spot.

Key Stats

• Benfica — Benfica is still undefeated at the FIFA Club World Cup and have scored in all three matches played — six goals scored, and two goals conceded in their three games played.

• Chelsea — Chelsea has won two of their three matches played in the competition so far, scoring in all three games.

• Both sides — Benfica and Chelsea have met on three previous occasions, with the Premier League side coming out on top on all three occasions. The last time they met was back in the 2013 Europa League Final, which Chelsea won 2-1, to lift the trophy.

The betting tip: Chelsea win.

Event # Club World CUP — PSG vs Inter Miami – 11:00 AM

European royalty meets American ambition in what could be one of the most fascinating clashes at the Club World Cup campaign yet. Indeed, PSG and Inter Miami represent two distinct football worlds colliding on the global stage, which should be a mouth-watering affair for football fans. With that said, PSG arrived in the USA as the favourites to win the tournament, and so far, they have been impressive, winning all three group matches played. Indeed, the Parisians have been in scintillating form since that emphatic 5-0 Champions League Final hammering of Inter Milan and winning 15 of their last 20 matches in all competitions.

It would be foolhardy to completely write off Inter Miami to secure a result against their more fancied rivals, as the MLS side has exceeded all expectations so far, remaining unbeaten in the tournament and securing second place in their group to advance to the round of 16. With that said, PSG’s European pedigree makes them overwhelming favourites but with Inter Miami’s fearless, nothing-to-lose approach, they will be aiming to create a real shocker at this Club World Cup, and getting a result against the European champions might not be too far-fetched as the MLS team has conceded just three goals from their three matches so far.

Key Stats

• PSG – Including the massive Champions League final victory on May 31, PSG has won seven of their previous eight matches in all competitions.

• Inter Miami – Inter Miami has just one clean sheet in their last 13 previous matches, that sole clean sheet coming against AL Ahly in this competition.

• Both sides – This will be the first meeting between both teams. PSG has not conceded in five of their last sixmatches, winning five during this run.

The betting tip: PSG win.
