Excelsior’s sprinters, Dockery light up Junior Championships
Excelsior High runners swept both junior boys’ 100m titles on Friday’s second day of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA)/PUMA National Junior Championships at the National Stadium.
The junior athletes are seeking to qualify for the NACAC Under-18 Championships in the Bahamas in July, as well as the Pan-American Under-20 Championships to be held in Nicaragua in August.
Riquelme Reid ran a wind-aided 10.23 seconds (2.1m/s) to take the Under-20 title, ahead of Antonio Powell (10.39) and Tray Barrett (10.49) of St Jago High.
Malike Nugent, who clocked 10.27 (1.2m/s), and Michael Graham (10.31) were first and second in the Under-18 final. Holmwood Technical’s Jaydon Collins was third with 10.33.
Sabrina Dockery’s bullet start carried her to the Under-20 girls’ 100m, running 11.28 (0.5m/s). She just held off the hard-charging Briana Campbell (11.36) with Jay-Deen Batchelor third in 11.78.
Shadae Allen took the Under-18 girls’ section with 12.15 (1.1m/s), Adora Campbell was second with 11.27 and Rebecca Nugent (12.35).
Earlier in the day, Calabar High’s Robert Miller won the Under-20 boys’ 400m hurdles title, running 50.31, just ahead of Herbert Morrison Technical’s Trevoy Smith (50.63) with Kishawn Hoffman (51.28) of Excelsior taking third.
Daynea Colstock of Green Island High won the girls’ 400m with 59.77, beating Deandra Harris (59.92) of the University of Technology, Jamaica.
Excelsior High’s Jaeden Campbell won the boys’ Under-18 with 52.24, while Kingston College’s Eshanee Porter was second with 52.33. Micah Willis of Calabar High took third with 53.56.
Rickoy Hunter had a wind-aided 7.81m (2.8m/s) to win the Under-20 boys’ long jump, beating Jahiem Watson of Bridgeport High, who had a personal best 7.50m (1.1m/s). Euan Young of Jamaica College took third with a wind-aided 7.36m (3.0m/s).
Kingston College’s Despiro Wray won the boys’ Under-20 shot put, throwing 19.39m, comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
Wray, who dominated the event all year, had two other throws over 18.60m. Munro College’s Devonte Edwards was second with 18.77m and another Kingston College thrower, Nkosana Johnson, was third with 16.81m.
Calabar High’s Kamari Kennedy won the Under-18 title with 18.07m, over a metre better than his teammate Khaleel Henry, who threw 16.98m. Sydney Pagon’s Dwight Fraser was third with 16.69m.
Alexia Palmer of Sydney Pagon High won the Under-18 girls’ 1,500m final in 4:48.37 minutes after a tight battle with Alphansus Davis’s Alikay Reynolds, who unexpectedly stopped running with about 120 metres to go.
Abigail Richards was second with 5:00.30 and Tabbrel Williams took third place with 5:13.76.
