Gray among Reggae Boyz aiming to resolve club future
While Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz’s exit from the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup isn’t being celebrated by the players, many of them will now have the chance to sort out their club future sooner than initially planned.
Among those are Saudi Arabia-based winger Demarai Gray who is set to return to England.
Jamaica crashed out of the group stage after finishing third behind Panama and Guatemala who advance to the knockout stages. The national senior men’s team was expected to make a deep run in the tournament which is set to end on July 6.
However, with the team contingent departing the United States this week, players’ club plans are accelerating.
Gray is set to move to the English Championship and sign for boyhood club Birmingham City in the coming days. The 28-year-old has spent the last two seasons in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq but failed to make a major mark with just five goals in 54 appearances. He will make the move to Birmingham on a free transfer, despite interest from teams in the English Premier League.
Gray, who has close to 200 Premier League appearances with Leicester City and Everton combined, made his professional debut with Birmingham in 2013 and went on to make 72 appearances. He then joined Leicester and won the premiership title in the 2015/2016 season.
Striker Michail Antonio is also set to resolve his future in short order after making a miraculous return to action with the Reggae Boyz, just six months after he was involved in a near-fatal car crash.
The 35-year-old, who made three substitute appearances at the Gold Cup, will see his contract with West Ham run out this Monday, though the club announced no decision has been taken over a potential extension.
It’s been reported that West Ham offered their all-time, league-leading goalscorer a short-term deal with incentive-based bonuses but Antonio, who has made 323 appearances since 2015, wants a longer-term contract with more guaranteed money.
Winger Leon Bailey is set to be out of favour at Aston Villa with the 27-year-old linked with a lucrative move to Saudi League club, Neom SC. However, earlier this month, his agent Craig Butler said he was in talks with several clubs and would be closer to making a decision following the Gold Cup.
Centre back Richard King’s move to Scottish Premier League club St Mirren from Cavalier FC has already been confirmed but he’s now due to travel to Paisley to complete his medical.
Striker Warner Brown is set to play for Arnett Gardens in next month’s CFU Club Shield, although overseas clubs have kept an eye on him since scoring 25 goals for club and country this season.
Other players who are set for moves is fullbacks Amari’i Bell and Dexter Lembikisa. Bell was released by Luton Town following their relegation to League One while Lembikisa is likely to be loaned out again by EPL club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Mason Holgate and Isaac Hayden, who both missed the Gold Cup, are also in search of new clubs after being released by Everton and Newcastle, respectively.
