Ann Marie Smith’s Green Haven
What began as a passion inherited from her mother, six decades ago, has blossomed into Ann Marie Smith’s flourishing garden, an environment that not only thrives, but fills her table with delicious fruits and farm produce.
Style Observer Gardening (SOG) was delighted to accept the invitation from the Annilu Limited co-founder to explore her verdant oasis, tucked away in the peaceful environs of Stony Hill.
Entering the driveway, SOG is immediately fascinated by an exquisite array of orchids, desert roses, bromeliads and hibiscus. In the backyard, we discover more plants, fruit trees and produce.
“I have fond memories of being in the garden with my mum and learning to appreciate the beauty of plants. When I got married in 1980 and settled in my own home, I started growing plants to soften the environment and make the space feel more alive,” Smith shared with
SOG. “Since moving to Stony Hill in 2008, my passion has only deepened — the climate here is kind to gardeners like me, with a lovely balance of sunshine and rainfall.”
Smith’s firm belief in eating what you grow manifests itself in a garden that perfectly balances vibrant flora and produce like pineapple, thyme, soursop, papaya, limes, peppermint, pomegranate, breadfruit, and Scotch bonnet peppers.
Moreover, the sight of fresh blooms flourishing brings Smith deep satisfaction.
“I often pick the first flower of the day and share a photo of it with a friend. This small act brings me happiness and keeps me connected to others through nature,” Smith said.
