WATCH: Driver in fatal car plunge had been performing u-turn, say police
The driver of a vehicle that plunged into the sea near the Portmore Causeway Bridge on Sunday had been performing a u-turn when the fatal crash occurred, according to the police.
Police have identified the deceased driver as 62-year-old Chinese businessman Gin Wang Wang, who resided on Hopefield Avenue in St Andrew.
“He would have gone fishing with friends and family and the rain came and he packed up his things put in his car and whilst making a U-turn it went over to the right side of the bridge to where we are standing now,” said Sergeant Canute Nairne of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Marine Division in an interview with Observer Online.
Sergeant Nairne cautioned the public against fishing along the Portmore Causeway Bridge.
The body of the businessman has since been recovered from the vehicle by emergency responders. Members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard and professional divers assisted in locating the body of Wang Wang.
“It is unfortunate again, but I would advise persons not to fish on this bridge. It is a restricted area, no one is allowed up here. You come at your own risk. There are rules, fishing gears, live vests, these are not being adhered to by persons who fish. You might want to fish causally but bear in mind the safety measures or you will have to suffer the consequences,” he said.
