Warmington under fire for ‘close your eyes and vote for Holness’ comment
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Controversial Member of Parliament (MP) Everald Warmington has drawn the ire of some social media users after urging supporters to vote blindly for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), using several expletives to get across his message at a JLP meeting on Sunday.
Speaking during a workers’ appreciation ceremony in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, the MP said, “Stop complain…You may not like your Member of Parliament, you don’t want him…” before maintaining that a JLP representative would still be better than the People’s National Party (PNP) alternative, and voters should “work with him”.
Warmington was speaking in the constituency of another controversial MP, George Wright, who resigned from the JLP in 2021 following a video that showed a domestic altercation between a man and a woman. Wright had been accused of being the man seen in the video repeatedly hitting the woman, leading to his JLP exit. No charges were ever laid against him.
He was welcomed back into the party in 2025 after what the JLP described as “mitigating actions” including counselling sessions.
“When you’re behind the screen, close your eyes… and say ‘mi a vote fi Andrew Holness,” Warmington encouraged, telling JLP supporters to let go of “nonsense” regarding candidates and “vote for your party” in a speech peppered with expletives.
“You don’t like your candidate? Vote for Andrew Holness Labour Party. Put the X beside the…bell,” he said.
Clips posted of the moment on social media drew negative reactions.
One Instagram user commented: “No class whatsoever. This is a shame for a Member of Parliament using such derogatory language on stage.”
Another added, “Whether JLP or PNP (People’s National Party), can we demand better behaviour from these people? SMH distasteful much.”
“So classless!! Why this man encouraging people to vote for people they don’t want, just so that Andrew can win? The desperation is real enu‼” another Instagram user said, while a user on TikTok added, “No respect for the electorate.”
