Lorde samples Dexta Daps’s Morning Love
New Zealand singer Lorde released her fourth studio album Virgin on June 27 via Universal Music New Zealand and Republic Records, and among the 11-track set is the song Current Affairs, which contains a sample from dancehall singer Dexta Daps’s 2014 song Morning Love.
The song is produced by DASECA Productions, headed by brothers Craig and David Harrisingh.
Dexta Daps (real name Louis Anthony Grandison) also received writers’ credit for the sample.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer on the weekend, the Harrisinghs were in high spirits about the use of their work by the multi-platinum-selling and Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singer.
When asked whether the process for the clearing of the sample for use by Lorde was an easy or difficult, Craig said: “The clearance process was handled by our manager and lawyer Candice Stephenson from PoshRebel Entertainment. She clears samples for many big international talents, so we felt comfortable allowing her to handle this for us, and we’re happy with the outcome.”
He added that he wasn’t sure what it was about Morning Love that spawned Lorde’s interest in the song, but that the focus was always to make good music.
“[I]t’s a reminder to just focus on making good music. You never know where it might take you,” Craig said.
His brother David was also in high spirits about Lorde’s use of their production.
“It’s a great feeling, but an even better one knowing that Jamaican music is being recognised worldwide and that artistes from other genres are interested in our music,” David reasoned.
This is not the first time that a song from the DASECA Productions label has been sampled by an international artiste. In 2016, Drake’s chart-topping and 10 million-selling album Views featured a sample from Mavado’s Dying on the track 9.
The Harrisingh brothers, Mavado, as well as Craig Marsh all received songwriting credit for the use of the sample.
DASECA Productions has had a decorated hit list of songs over the years, among them Shabba Madda Pot by Dexta Daps, Jealous Ova by Dexta and Tifa, Doh by Serani and Bugle, Skip to Ma Lu by Serani and Ding Dong, and Bugle’s breakthrough 2007 hit
What I’m Gonna Do (Exercise Every day).
The production duo also composed the Unfinished Business rhythm for TJ Records, which featured two Billboard charting singles So Special by Mavado and No Games by Serani. They also produced the rhythm for Elephant Man’s Nuh Linga, which also charted on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart.
In terms of new music, David said the label is coming with some big bangers.
“We’re currently working on several projects, both locally and internationally, with some very talented artistes. Those are set to be released later this year,” he shared.
Lorde, who shot to fame with the nine-week Billboard Hot 100 #1 single Royals, is also known for the hit single Team. She has sold more than 10 million units of Royals, making it one of the biggest selling singles of all time. She also has two Grammy Awards and 2 Brit Awards to her credit.
