Karl and Pauline Samuda scholarships to benefit youth in St Andrew North Central
JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) standard-bearer in St Andrew North Central Delano Seiveright has announced the establishment of two scholarships for young people in the constituency he hopes to get the nod in Parliament.
Seiveright on Tuesday announced that the Karl Samuda Scholarship for Excellence and the Pauline Samuda Scholarship for Determination will be awarded to students in the constituency each year.
According to Seiveright, the scholarships will range in value from $25,000 to $150,000 and will go to needy children from early childhood education centres to high schools.
“Funding is made possible through generous contributions of private sector donors who also reside in the constituency,” Seiveright told the
Jamaica Observer following a graduation ceremony at St Richard’s Primary School.
“This is about bringing people together ensuring that the successes of some can create new opportunities for others. Our children deserve every chance to succeed, and we must work as a community to make that possible,” added Seiveright.
He said the scholarships were named in honour of the Samudas who have had a tremendous impact on the lives of residents of St Andrew North Central for decades.
Karl Samuda was first elected Member of Parliament for the constituency in 1980 and has served unbroken since them. His wife has been an ever-present by his side through the years and at the forefront of pushing education opportunities for children in the constituency.
Seiveright underscored that as MP Samuda organised significant upgrades to the Constant Spring Primary School, Swallowfield Infant and Primary School, and the Constant Spring Football Field, alongside broad financial and technical support for students and schools.
He further pointed to Karl Samuda’s leadership as Cabinet minister with responsibility for education, “where he advanced critical improvements to the national education system”.
Seiveright also announced that private sector donors have presented him with televisions, fans, air condition units, and other essential resources to enhance the learning environment and improve comfort for teachers and students in schools across the constituency.
“This is just the beginning,” declared Seiveright.
“By working together, we can build on the strong foundation laid by the Samudas and create an environment where every child can realise their full potential,” added Seiveright.
