Interesting 2025 St Leger facts and figures
1) This year’s St Leger has drawn a field of 14 three-year-olds. It stands as the first of three Classic races in which colts, geldings, and fillies go head-to-head. Among the contenders, four are fillies: Burning Hedge, Mighty Gully, Pretty Perfect, and Hansa. The most recent filly to claim victory was Thalita in 2023.
2) Four stallions currently at stud are each represented by two runners in the 2025 St Leger:
• Buzz Nightmare: Big Buzz (out of Tarkari) and Mighty Gully (out of Lady Exotic)
• Sensational Slam: Beneison (Benediction) and Pretty Perfect ( Black Bombshell)
• Hedge Fund: Burning Hedge (Burning Clearance) and Bob The Builder (Sound of Miracle)
• Soul Warrior: Sensational Soul (Red Gold) and I Dream Again (Lady Najariya)
3 ) Only two trainers are double-handed in this year’s event: Jason DaCosta, with I Dream Again and Prince Roy; and Gary Subratie, with Sensational Soul and Pretty Perfect.
4) Of the 14 jockeys scheduled to ride in the St Leger, four have already savoured success in this prestigious race: Omar Walker, Raddesh Roman, Shane Ellis, and Reyan Lewis.
5) Shane Ellis leads the pack with five St Leger victories: Typewriter (2012), Relampago (2014), Marquesas (2018), Supreme Soul (2015), and Calculus (2021).
6) Demar Williams is the sole rider from the latest Jamaica Racing Commission School graduating class of December 2024 to earn a mount in the 2025 St Leger.
