Kyle Butler looks to build legacy as Vauxhall High head coach
FOOTBALLER Kyle Butler is relishing the opportunity to take on a new challenge in coaching, having agreed to sign on as Vauxhall High School’s head coach ahead of the upcoming ISSA football season.
Butler, who last featured in the Jamaica Premier League with relegated Vere Phoenix United, describes the role as an exciting opportunity — one he simply could not refuse.
“It’s a big moment for me,” he said. “I’ve always known I wanted to lead, and this opportunity gives me a real chance to build something meaningful from the ground up.
“There’s pressure, of course, but I feel motivated and clear about what needs to be done. I see it as a chance to be impactful — not just with wins and losses, but with lives.”
The position marks Butler’s first official stint as a head coach, and he believes his experiences both on and off the field have prepared him well for the challenge.
“I’ve played professionally, managed artistes, and built businesses — each of those roles taught me discipline, structure, and how to motivate people toward a shared goal,” he said. “It’s also helped me understand that legacy isn’t just what you do, it’s who you lift up while doing it.”
The 27-year-old midfielder, who suited up for Vere last season, brings with him international experience, having played professionally in Belgium and Greece before returning to Jamaica to reignite his playing career.
As for whether his playing days are officially behind him, Butler says he has not completely closed that door.
“If the opportunity is there for me to play then I will play, for sure,” he said. “If not, I will focus on my coaching career, which is the priority for me right now.”
Vauxhall High have long battled to leave a lasting mark on the Manning Cup, having yet to claim the coveted title. However, Butler remains undeterred, confident in his readiness to take on the challenge.
“Pressure is part of the job and, to be honest, I welcome it,” he said. “I’ve been under pressure in many areas of life and I’ve always shown up. I have a clear vision, a strong support system, and a deep belief in the boys and what we can build at Vauxhall.
“I’m not here for short-term hype; I’m here to create a system that lasts so yes, I’m ready.”
Kyle will be assisted by Coach Nicholas Smith, who spearheaded the Kingston Technical High School football programme during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
