Political ombudsman urges political parties, supporters to uphold respect in campaign season
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) is urging the country’s political parties and their supporters to demonstrate respect for each other and the democratic process as Jamaica prepares for the upcoming election.
The ECJ, in a statement on Wednesday, said this call comes amid increasing reports of political paraphernalia, including posters, banners and flyers being removed, defaced and destroyed allegedly by individuals who do not support the candidates or parties the posters represent.
“This behaviour undermines the spirit of democracy and peaceful political engagement. We understand the passion that comes with political campaigning, but we must all remember that democracy thrives where there is mutual respect,” said Earl Jarrett, chairman of ECJ.
The political ombudsman also sought to remind political parties and their supporters that each Jamaican has the right to participate in the political process without fear or intimidation, which includes the right to display and promote their political choice without interference. Political leaders are especially encouraged to set the tone of unity, tolerance and restraint.
The Office of the Political Ombudsman said it will continue to monitor campaign activity and urged the public to report violations of the Agreement and Declaration on Political Conduct.
Members of the public are encouraged to submit any complaints or reports of breaches to the Political Ombudsman in writing via the online complaints portal at www.ecj.com.jm (click on Office of the Ombudsman Complaints Form) or by email to ecjombudsman@eoj.com.jm or delivered to the Office of the Political Ombudsman located at 46 Duke Street, Kingston. They can also contact the Office of the Political Ombudsman at (876) 754-5845.
