Can Raddesh Roman break Trevor Simpson’s record?
Champion jockey Raddesh Roman is currently on a hot streak with seven wins under his belt over the weekend. Roman is now 68 wins into the season, and his sights are firmly set on breaking the revered record of 172 winners in one season, held by Trevor Simpson.
Roman booted five winners on Saturday, July 5, 2025, aboard Sir John, Supernatural Power, Nuclear Jet, Strike Smart, and Desert of Malibu. He didn’t let up on Sunday, guiding home two more winners,
Alkebulan and Blue Vinyl, to bring his weekend total to seven wins.
“Winning seven races over the weekend is a pretty good feeling,” Roman said with a smile. “It’s a blessing to be in this position, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do what I love,” he told the Jamaica Observer’s
The Supreme Racing Guide.
Commenting about the secret of his success, Roman said: “Hard work and dedication — that’s what it takes to win races. You just go out and do your best, and the results follow.”
As Roman chases another jockey’s championship title, he’s well aware of the competition, but his focus remains on his own performance. “I wouldn’t say there’s no competition, but I’m leading far, and I have to give thanks for that. I’ll continue to put in the hard work and deliver when I get the horses,” Roman said.
Roman’s target is clear: ride well, win as many races as possible, and set records if opportunity allows. “If it comes down to that I can set a record, then I’ll definitely set it,” he said with determination.
Breaking Trevor Simpson’s record is a tantalising prospect, but Roman approaches it with a level head. “It doesn’t really matter,” he said. “I’ll work towards it and hope for the best. I just want to stay injury-free, fit, and continue to work hard. Hopefully, I’ll get good mounts and put them away,” Roman added.
With 38 race days left in the year and 105 wins needed to break the record, Roman faces a challenging but achievable task. He’ll need to average just fewer than three wins per race day to reach the milestone.
