34 killed in 29 fatal crashes in June says ITA
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Thirty-four persons have been killed in 29 fatal crashes in the month of June according to the Island Traffic Authority, (ITA).
Fatalities increased by 31 per cent when compared to June 2024 while fatal crashes were up 26 per cent during the reporting period, the Authority said in its latest statistics released on Friday, July 11.
With six fatalities each, the parishes of St James, Clarendon and St Catherine accounted for more than 50 per cent of the road deaths during the month. St Elizabeth recorded five deaths, while St Ann and St Mary each had two.
There were two fatalities each recorded in Westmoreland and St Andrew while Hanover had one. The safest parishes for road users during the month of June were Kingston, Portland, St Thomas and Trelawny, which recorded no deaths as a result of motor vehicle crashes.
Meanwhile, the ITA said private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 29 per cent or 10 fatalities in June 2025. Private motor vehicle driver fatalities increased by 43 per cent when compared to June 2024.
The statistics show that private motor vehicle passengers accounted for 24 per cent or eight fatalities during the month. Private motor vehicle passenger fatalities have increased by 100 per cent or four, when compared to June 2024. The ITA said pedestrians accounted for 18 per cent or six fatalities during June. Pedestrian fatalities were up 100 per cent when compared to June 2024.
Regarding motorcyclists, six were killed in June, representing 18 per cent of the fatalities recorded during the month. Motorcyclist fatalities have decreased by 14 per cent or one, when compared to June 2024.
Overall, 199 road users have been killed in 174 fatal crashes since the start of the year. Fatalities decreased by three per cent when compared to prior year while fatal crashes are down by three per cent when compared with the similar period in 2024.
Motorcyclists account for 53 or 27 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year; private motor vehicle drivers account for 41 or 21 per cent; pedestrians account for 39 or 20 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers account for 31 or 16 per cent; pedal cyclists account for eleven or six per cent; and pillion passengers account for 10 fatalities or five per cent.
According to the statistics, males account for 85 per cent and females 15 per cent of the fatalities since the start of the year.
