PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad’s Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has ordered an investigation into the leak of sensitive information about a case involving a junior attorney who has accused a senior lawyer of sexual assault.

The probe “will seek to determine how this confidential information entered the public domain and to identify and hold accountable any person(s) found responsible for breaching the law or internal protocols,” says a  statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).

The announcement came on the heels of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) calling for a probe, as it condemned the dissemination of the complainant’s name, image, and details of her statement to police, online.

The complainant alleged that she was sexually assaulted by 58-year-old attorney Martin Anthony George – the founding chairman of CrimeStoppers International for the Caribbean region, and chairman and founding director of the Tobago Business Chamber, at his Port of Spain office on March 22, 2025.

George appeared in court last Wednesday on charges of grievous sexual assault and indecent assault and was granted bail in the sum of TT$150,000. He was ordered not to have any contact with the victim, directly or indirectly and to stay at least 500 metres away from her at all times.

LATT last Friday reminded the public that under the Sexual Offences Act, it is a criminal offence to publish or broadcast any information likely to lead to the identification of a complainant in a sexual offences matter. This was reinforced in the TTPS statement.

“The law is unambiguous on the manner in which sexual offences investigations are to be conducted, particularly concerning the protection of the identity and privacy of victims. The Sexual Offences Act and related laws exist precisely to safeguard victims from further trauma and to encourage the reporting of these serious crimes,” it said.

It added that, “The TTPS remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the law, protecting victims, and ensuring that all investigations, especially those involving sexual offences, are conducted with the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism and sensitivity”.

The TTPS further urged the public and the media to refrain from sharing or publishing any material that could further expose or harm the complainant, and to allow due process to take its course.
