Joby Jay prioritising progress
...aims to build strong musical foundation
Recording artiste Joby Jay will be the first to admit that while her career has been on an upward trajectory over the past year she is not focused on a meteoric rise. Instead, the soulful singer says she is prioritising slow and steady progress as she enjoys the journey to musical maturity.
Having turned in a commanding performance in front of a sold-out crowd at the recently concluded Live & Direc’ show, Joby Jay says she has been strategically easing herself into more live performances to build out her core fan base.
“I am grateful for every step in my career so far. Every journey has led me to exactly where I need to be,” she told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview. “I don’t necessarily worry about timeline and how fast I think things should happen. I honestly just try to enjoy each phase of this journey and remain in gratitude. You have to start somewhere, and I know things will fall into place for me exactly how and when they should.”
The singer is enjoying a heavy dose of success. She said that, so far, 2025 has allowed her several opportunities to grow her following.
“I have to big up my team. They’re always advocating for me, mentioning my name in every room they walk into, and presenting me to important people,” she shared. “For me, I just want to be given a chance. The more people see me the more they enquire; and the more they recognise my talent the more they refer me to others. It’s all about continuous effort and growth for me, and me just putting myself out there every time.”
Big Girl Ting, Bear, Love Vibration, and You Stole My Heart are among some of the singer’s most popular singles. The fashionista says while she continues to build her musical repertoire, she’s also developing her image. According to her, image is what usually sets an artiste apart and sends the strongest business signal.
“If you think about the stars — Beyonce, Rihanna, Elvis, and even Bob Marley — they all have an image crafted to their artistry. They always look presentable; they always look good, like a star. I believe if you’re going to be a star then you should embody that in every way, and so I always take how I look into consideration. You have to look the part to be the part,” she said.
