Policemen charged in relation to 2024 shooting incident following Indecom investigation
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, in relation to a non-fatal shooting incident of a man, which took place on January 1, 2024 at Seaview Gardens, Kingston.
Charged are Corporal Lavon Francis and Corporal Kawain Johnson.
The two allege that a group of individuals fired in the direction of lawmen, and the police fired in response.
A firearm was reported as recovered from the scene of the incident, though an alleged eyewitness account indicates that the injured man was not armed.
Following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ruled that Corporal Francis and Constable Johnson should be charged for wounding with intent.
They were each granted bail in the sum of $1million with one to two sureties and reporting conditions.
They are schedule to reappear in court on October 28.
Since January 1, 2025, 11 lawmen (10 JCF members) and one DCS officer) have been charged in relation to cases investigated by Indecom.
In 2024, 24 JCF members, three DCS officers and one member of the JDF, were charged in relation to investigations undertake by Indecom, including fatal shooting incidents.
Since 2024, a total of 39 lawmen have been charged following investigations by Indecom.
