Two trainers, one jockey secure first seasonal victories last weekend
The Caymanas Park racing meet on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 was a momentous occasion for three racing professionals, who celebrated their first wins of the 2025 season.
Trainer Anthony Dixon finally broke his duck with a thrilling victory in the first race on Saturday. His seasoned campaigner, Nala’s Bushman, a 10-year-old bay gelding, stormed home under the guidance of jockey Rotajmar Mair. The win marked Dixon’s first trip to the winners’ enclosure in 2025 and his ninth career win for Nala’s Bushman.
Veteran trainer Howard McLeod also joined the winners’ list, saddling Matuso to a convincing victory in the ninth race, also on Saturday. With Romario Spencer aboard, Matuso seized the lead early in the race and cruised to the finish line. The win was McLeod’s first of the season from just four starts.
Jockey Rayon Blake’s wait for a win finally ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday. After finishing second aboard Lord Espo, trained by Donavan Clarke, Blake benefited from a stewards’ inquiry that disqualified the initial winner, Bobbytwobad. As a result, Blake was declared the winner, marking his first win of the 2025 season.
