Vision Alexander celebrates gold certification of Teyana Taylor’s The Album
Jamaican-born, Florida-based Grammy-winning songwriter and recording artiste Vision Alexander is celebrating the recent gold-certification of American R&B singer Teyana Taylor’s third studio album The Album.
The Album was on June 19 certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of American (RIAA) for sales and streaming equivalent of 500,000 units.
Vision Alexander and fellow Grammy-winning producer Sean Alaric and MIXX (California based multi-platinum selling producer/engineer whose parents are Jamaicans), were involved in the track Bad, which is featured on Taylor’s project.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer on the weekend, Vision Alexander explained how he got to be a part of Taylor’s album.
“A good friend of mine by the name of MIXX reached out to me and Sean Alaric to be a part of the Teyana Taylor album. Our involvement was to give the authentic dancehall/reggae vibe and essence to the project. An example of this production which Teyana’s fans fell in love with, off the album was a song called Bad. I, Sean, MIXX, and Kongo were honoured to be asked to bring a sound that represented our Jamaican culture and vibe. The song Bad brought that Jamaican essence that Teyana wanted to share with her fans. Thanks to MIXX and Teyana for believing in Sean and myself to execute and be a part of this great body of work,” Vision Alexander shared.
Vision Alexander shared that the collaboration was completed during the pandemic.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to meet Teyana in person. During that time the album was created during the pandemic, Sean and I were based in Florida… Teyana and MIXX were based in California. Teyana, not too long after The Album was released, decided to take a break from music for a couple of years. So to get this news that this body of work, which was created in 2020, has gone gold is definitely a blessing for all individuals involved in this project. Just goes to show you good music always finds it way no matter the time or place,” he said.
Vision Alexander said earning this certification really means a lot.
“I’ve earned Grammy and had songs placed in movies during my career as a songwriter, but now to earn a gold certification in America truly strengthens my resume as one of Jamaica’s top songwriters/vocal producers in the game. This continues to show me that God put me on this Earth to make a joyful noise to all his lands. And with his grace and help. I hope to continue making great music with talented producers and artistes who I’ve met along the way,” he shared.
He shared that he is currently writing the score for Threads of Us, an independent feature film powered by an all-Caribbean cast and crew, which is directed by Jamaican film-maker Mykal Cushnie and written by Donisha Prendergast.
Born and raised in Kingston, Alexander attended St George’s College, after which he received a football scholarship to attend Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut. He now resides in South Florida.
The first song he wrote was Jammin, his collaboration with Morgan Heritage member Mojo Morgan, which was produced by Warren Blouse.
He has also written songs for Jo Mersa Marley, Jaz Elise, G Whizz, and Romain Virgo.
The Album, released via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings features collaborations with Erykah Badu, Khelani, Big Sean, Lauryn Hill, Future, Rick Ross, Quavo, Missy Elliott, Davido among others.
It peaked at #1 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, #8 on the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart, #6 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, #12 on the UK R&B Albums chart and #72 on the Canadian Albums chart.
The set sold 32,000 album equivalent units its first week of release and became the first top 10 album for Teyana Taylor on the Billboard 200. Among the singles released were How You Want it, Morning, We Got Love, and Wake Up Love.
