Former Jamaican footballer Kenneth Campbell passes
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former Jamaican footballer Kenneth Campbell, also known as Alonzo Hawk in the music industry, died at home on Friday night.
Campbell, who was 74 years old, represented Jamaica’s senior football team in the 1970s while playing on the dominating Santos FC team winning multiple titles.
He made a name for himself at Vere Technical High School winning the daCosta Cup football titles in 1967, 1968 and 1969 unbeaten and won three all-island Olivier Shield crown. He also played on Vere’s winning Headley Cup cricket team.
Campbell later led Vere Technical to two daCosta Cup titles as head coach in 1976 and 1980.
Campbell also known as “Bop” made his Jamaican debut in 1967 as a 17-year-old under George Thompson and played against Haiti.
He was a talented left-footed player that played as a striker, left winger and left back for Jamaica and Santos, and was once Jamaica’s leading goalscorer.
Campbell followed his father into music and was known as Alonzo Hawk, a much-loved music selector.
He was arrested and charged in 2021 for breaching the Disaster Risk Management Act during the COVID era for playing music at a party in Olympic Gardens on December 16, 2020.
