JUTC discontinues routes 30, 32 and 47 after recurring stoning of buses
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has discontinued bus service on three routes due to recurring stone-throwing incidents along Washington Boulevard in Kingston.
JUTC made the announcement in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) late Friday night. The discontinued bus routes are routes 30, 32 and 47.
“These attacks have caused six damaged buses and six accidents. We urge the public to stop and report incidents at 876-570-1789,” the company urged.
Three buses were reportedly stoned Friday night along Washington Boulevard, while another was reportedly stoned in Rockfort.
A passenger on one of the buses which was stoned along Washington Boulevard shared with Observer Online that the incident occurred sometime before 8:00 pm.
“Some people stopped to come off the bridge and by the time they pressed the buzzer, a the stone that a come down on the bus. Him affi come all the way down to the corner and stop. Them no stop a the bus stop because out there was dark. Out there want light,” she shared. “Me stand up inna the bus and me a duck cause me no know if the stone a come in deh pan we.”
No passengers were reportedly harmed as a result of the incident.
It is understood that the management of JUTC has notified the Commissioner of Police, Dr Kevin Blake following the incident and police officers have since been deployed along those corridors.
