JWPL regular season pulls to a close; semi-finals on the horizon
The regular season of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) will come to an end this afternoon with a full schedule of matches. The focus will be on the semi-final qualifiers, all hoping to fine-tune preparations for next weekend’s start of the play-offs.
Defending champions Frazsiers Whip FC, who are unbeaten so far with 55 points, lead the pack. They are followed by second-placed Cavalier FC (50 points), with Arnett Gardens FC (45) in third place and Los Perfectos FC (39) taking the final semi-final place.
In next weekend’s first leg semi-finals, Frazsiers Whip are to take on Los Perfectos FC, while Cavalier and Arnett Gardens are to meet in a double-header set for Constant Spring.
This afternoon, Frazsiers Whip FC are to host Mile Gully FC at Royal Lakes and hope to rebound from last weekend’s 1-1 result against Arnett Gardens when they were rescued by a free kick in time added from Shaneil Buckley.
After just missing their first loss of the season, Frazsiers Whip are hoping to end the regular season on a high against a Mile Gully team they beat 7-0 in the first round.
Frazsiers Whip FC’s Davia Richards leads all scorers with 38 goals and is expected to lead the line along with Destiny Powell who has scored 20 goals and Nevillegail Able (11).
Arnett Gardens FC secured third place on Wednesday after beating Federal United 6-0 in a rescheduled game. They travel to Jarrett Park to face Real MoBay AFC who were beaten 5-0 by Mile Gully also on Wednesday.
Arnett Gardens FC won their first-round game 7-0 and are hoping for another easy game with Shikira Douglas, who scored her 31st goal of the season on Wednesday hoping to get closer to those ahead of her.
Los Perfectos FC has outscored their opponents 11-0 over their last three games and the odds are on their side to extend their run of ‘clean sheets’ when they take on last placed Springers United who they had beaten 9-0 in their first-round meeting.
After snapping a nine-game losing skid with a win over Federal United last weekend, UWI Women’s FC are hoping to end the season with back-to-back wins but face a WiFi United team who are one place and nine points better than them in the tables.
WiFi United will be seeking to avenge their first-round loss to UWI Women and will have home advantage at Carder Park.
