Vybz Kartel crowned ‘King of Dancehall’, acknowledges ‘former king’ Beenie Man
Vybz Kartel was officially crowned ‘King of Dancehall’ at Reggae Sumfest.
The crowning took place on Saturday morning at Catherine Hall with ‘Queen of Dancehall’ Spice and Sumfest organiser Downsound Entertainment’s Joe Bogdanovich sharing in the moment.
Kartel, who last performed at the event back in 2011 shortly before his arrest and later conviction, got the option of choosing from two crowns presented on a pillow.
In accepting his crown, Vybz Kartel thanked his fans and acknowledged the “former king” of the genre.
“People, it’s a joy fi sit down yah suh inna mi owna country and the people a seh, ‘Worl’ Boss, yuh finally officially deserve it. Big up yuhself,” Kartel said to his adoring fans.
He added: “…I’m gonna be the bigger person. Big up to Beenie Man, the former king.”
The entertainer also showed his appreciation to Bounty Killer, Buju Banton and Ninja Man for inspiring his career.
For his part, Bogdanovich noted that the crowning was well deserved and due right on time.
“This is a great historical moment and we’re blessed to be here. People get excited sometimes and they do some things, but it’s all about love; it’s about change, community and helping one another and this man— big him up!” Bogdanovich said.
