...More than 30 vie for Sing Like CeCe Winans competition spot
TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Seventh-day Adventist Geovanni Baker is the winner of the Sing Like CeCe Winans competition.
Baker beat out some 30 entrants to earn the honour.
Deandra Brown and Treveen Little finished second and third, respectively.
Jonathan Fletcher, digital marketing specialist with Come Alive Collective, organisers of the August 1 staging of the CeCe Winans More Than This concert set for King’s House, East Lawns, explained the overall objective of the competition.
“The aim of the CeCe Winans singing competition was to uplift the nation through the powerful and inspiring music of CeCe Winans. It was designed to give individuals a platform to share their talent while spreading hope and encouragement through song,” Fletcher told the Jamaica Observer on Friday.
He gave insight into how the winner was selected.
“All entries were first reviewed and shortlisted by a panel of gospel music industry professionals, who selected the top 10 videos based on vocal quality, creativity, and emotional impact. These top 10 videos were then posted on social media, and the winner was determined by the number of likes their video received,” hew said.
The first-place winner receives a VVIP ticket to the CeCe Winans More Than This concert, an interview on Love 101 FM and a performance slot during the pre-show segment of the concert.
The runners-up will also receive tickets to the event.
Speaking with the Observer, Baker, a big of Winans, shared why he decided to enter.
“I entered the competition out of my love for gospel music and Cece Winans and her music. As a Christian and gospel singer I wanted to participate to show my appreciation for a legendary singer who has inspired my love for gospel music as well,” he said, while adding, “I grew up listening to Cece, thanks to my parents and my big sister who used to play her music a lot. Let’s just say I’ve streamed all her music on Apple Music as a result, and I enjoy listening to her music from Throne Room right up to More Than This. Her music resonates with me as it demonstrates themes of love and compassion that God has for us. I’m probably her biggest fan.”
Baker sang his favourite CeCe Winans song, More Than What I Wanted.
He is looking forward to attending the concert.
“I’m very excited about the worship encounter, to see the other artistes as well from Jamaica that we’ve grown to love share the stage with CeCe,” the Manchester native and past student of de Carteret College and Northern Caribbean University shared.
