WATCH: Mayor Swaby says drain cleaning to begin in Kingston hotspots soon
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Mayor of Kingston, Andrew Swaby, has announced that work is to commence in the coming weeks to clean several gullies and drains in sections of New Haven, Harbour View, Weise Road, and other communities.
Swaby, who recently completed a two-day tour of 10 divisions to assess the condition of blocked gullies and drains first-hand, noted that New Haven, Harbour View, including the Wickie Wackie area, and Weise Road are some of the main hotspots for garbage build-up.
“The city engineering department has made some recommendations that these are the drains that they believe need to be cleaned. And normally at the KSAMC (Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation) we clean these drains first in phase one of the hurricane season,” the mayor said.
He continued, “Quite a number of them are in a deplorable condition and some of them need to be cleaned right away. Some of them, I believe, can be solved with the whole issue of garbage collection and persons just need to dispose of their waste in a proper way. It’s of health concern and it’s something I probably have to speak to the public health [about].”
Mayor Swaby said the city’s engineering department will be making contact with the councillors and work should commence in less than a week.
