Gordon Webley moves to clean-up St Andrew West Rural
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Joan Gordon-Webley, the People’s National Party (PNP) candidate for St Andrew West Rural in the upcoming general election, has officially launched a community-based waste containment initiative aimed at improving the cleanliness and environmental health of the constituency.
Last week, residents of the Brandon Hill and Lawrence Tavern divisions would have noticed the placement of blue waste receptacle barrels in key public areas, marked with the acronyms TRIL and WRSA — representing her campaign’s guiding values of tolerance, respect, integrity and love, and the constituency of West Rural St Andrew.
Gordon-Webley explained that the containers have been strategically installed in areas where waste regularly accumulates, including community squares and high-traffic gathering spaces.
“Importantly, the barrels are painted in neutral, non-political colours—deliberately avoiding orange or green—to emphasise their community-focused, nonpartisan purpose,” she said. A former executive director at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Gordon-Webley conceptualised the initiative in response to what she said was the “depressed and generally dirty” state of many areas in the constituency.
“Containerisation is the first step in proper waste management,” she stated. “These bins will support the work of the NSWMA, making it easier for the agency to collect and remove garbage, rather than having it remain on our roadsides or find its way into our rivers.”
The project was made possible through the support of volunteers and donors, and Gordon-Webley emphasised that the focus remains on community benefit over individual use. While some citizens have requested containers for personal use, the initiative remains geared toward public impact and environmental responsibility.
The Member of Parliament-aspirant said residents of Red Hills and Stony Hill can expect to see bins installed in their communities in the coming weeks, as the effort continues to expand across all four divisions of the constituency.
“Clean surroundings contribute to community pride and public health; this is about restoring dignity to our spaces—together,” said Gordon-Webley.
Political watchers have indicated that she is in a tough battle with two-term Member of Parliament, the Jamaica Labour Party’s Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn. St Andrew West Rural, a swing constituency, is one of three to four Corporate Area seats that the PNP is targeting in its bid to win the upcoming general election. Others include St Andrew East Rural, St Andrew Eastern and Kingston Central.
