KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Office of the Political Ombudsman is urging political leaders and their supporters to exercise sound judgement, responsible conduct and adherence to the principles of peaceful political engagement.

This appeal follows reports of alleged gunfire in Kingston Central on Sunday, in the vicinity of a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) meeting.

“While the nature and circumstances of the incident remain unverified, the Political Ombudsman emphasises that no act of violence—real or perceived—should be tolerated or permitted to interfere with the conduct of free and fair elections,” the office said in a statement on Tuesday.

The office also confirmed that the Political Ombudsman Division has scheduled a meeting with the Police High Command in the division and will undertake a tour of the area to observe political activity and assess the general atmosphere surrounding electioneering at this time.

“The office reaffirms its strong commitment to upholding the Political Code of Conduct, safeguarding the constitutional rights to freedom of association, expression and peaceful assembly, and promoting a climate of mutual respect and democratic engagement,” the statement continued.

Political participants are further urged to maintain restraint, civility and respect for the rule of law.

“The Political Ombudsman encourages supporters, candidates and the wider public to refrain from any action that may be interpreted as threatening, provocative or disruptive to the democratic process. The office remains dedicated to fostering an environment of peace and accountability, and urges all relevant authorities to continue monitoring developments as necessary. Political violence, in any form, must be wholly rejected in the interest of a stable, secure and democratic Jamaica,” the office said.
