Over 4,000 electronic motor vehicle registration certificates issued in first two days of rollout
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has reported a strong start to the rollout of its new electronic Motor Vehicle Registration Certificate (eMVRC) system, with more than 4,000 certificates successfully issued across the island in just the first two days following its launch on Monday.
The new system officially replaces the traditional paper-based certificates and decals/stickers, ushering in a fully digital registration process for motorists.
Under the Road Traffic Amendment Act 2025, not only are registration certificates now issued electronically, but motorists also have an expanded range of licensing periods to choose from.
In addition to the existing six-month and one-year options, a new two-year licensing period has been introduced.
For example, owners of private vehicles with an engine rating of 1,500cc can now license their vehicle at a cost of $6,300 for 6 months, $12,600 for one year, or $25,200 for two years.
To complete vehicle registration or renewal whether online or in person at a tax office motorists must provide a valid email address. This email is essential for receiving instructions on how to access the eMVRC via the Certificate Generation and Delivery Service (CGDS) Portal at www.cgds.gov.jm or through the TAJ website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.
Customers visiting tax offices are reminded to supply their email address to the collections officer or cashier during the transaction. Once the process is complete, they will receive a receipt and follow-up instructions via email on how to retrieve their electronic certificate.
In keeping with digital modernisation efforts, motorists no longer need to visit select tax offices to collect registration documents. Instead, they will receive an email notification detailing how to access the eMVRC online.
The electronic system also ensures that all vehicle registration data is readily accessible to authorised entities including the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), insurance companies, and financial institutions, allowing for easy document verification.
In collaboration with the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) which has also launched electronic fitness certificates TAJ will host a live podcast on Thursday, July 24. The session will provide motorists with information and answers regarding the new eMVRC and eFitness services. Details on how to join the discussion can be found on TAJ’s official website and social media platforms.
