Grenadian gov’t restrict public access to hospital amid criminal gang activity
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — The Grenada Government has restricted public access to the male surgical ward of the General Hospital in response to recent safety concerns involving suspected gang-related activity.
A Government statement said that “effective immediately” access to the ward “is temporarily restricted”.
“This proactive measure has been taken in response to recent safety concerns involving suspected gang-related activity in the vicinity of the hospital. To protect patients, staff and visitors, heightened security protocols are now in place, including increased police presence and a complete suspension of visits to the male surgical ward.”’
The Government statement also warned that persons should expect that entry to the hospital may involve delays and thorough screening.
“Alternative communication arrangements are being implemented to keep next-of-kin updated on the condition of their loved ones,” said the release, adding that the management of the hospital “understands the inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciates the patience, cooperation and understanding of relatives, friends and the public”.
The public has also been informed that there will be a dedicated 24-hour armed police presence at the Accident and Emergency Department at the General Hospital and that there will be security screening, involving a metal detector and bag check for all walk-in patients and visitors before entry.
“These measures are necessary to safeguard our staff, patients and visitors,” said Marva Primus-Joseph, acting director of hospital services.
The new measures follow the confirmation by police of a shooting incident which left one person dead and four others injured.
