McPherson wins back-to-back 100m races as Reid loses in Sweden
ODAINE McPherson made it back-to-back wins when he took the men’s 100m at the Folksam Grand Prix in Goteborg, Sweden, on Tuesday.
He ran 10.09 seconds (-0.1m/s) in the final.
McPherson and national women’s Under-20 record holder Alana Reid were on course for consecutive wins as they won their respective events at a meet in Portugal on Saturday, but Reid placed second in her final.
McPherson, who ran a wind-aided 10.13 seconds (2.1m/s), beat Sweden’s Henrik Larsson who was second in 10.12 seconds, just off his season’s best 10.11 seconds, with Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike third in a season’s best 10.13 seconds.
Reid, who ran 11.39 seconds (-0.1m/s) to win her semi-final race, clocked 11.23 seconds (0.2m/s) in the final for second, beaten by 19-year-old Liranyi Alonso of the Dominican Republic who ran 11.15 seconds, after she had lowered her national record to 11.14 seconds (0.3m/s) in the semis.
Sweden’s Julia Henriksson was third in 11.46 seconds.
Many-time national champion Danniel Thomas-Dodd was second in the women’s shot put, throwing 18.82m, beaten by Sweden’s Fanny Roos who led from the start to win with 19.14m.
Germany’s Katharina Maisch was third with 17.93m.
Shawn-D Thompson was second in the men’s long jump with a best of 7.75m (0.1m/s) as Thobias Montler of Sweden won with 7.79m (0.7m/s) and South Africa’s Cheswell Johnson was third with 7.62m, all their best jumps coming in the final round.
Today, a number of Jamaican athletes will continue their quest for qualifying standards for the World Athletics Championships set for September in Tokyo, Japan. This includes Christopher Taylor, national women’s champion Ashanti Moore, and Adelle Tracey, at several meets across Europe.
Moore and Tracy will compete in the women’s 200m and 800m, respectively, at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open Eisenstadt in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Moore, who competed at the London Diamond League meet on Saturday, will accompany Candice McLeod in the half-lap race as she seeks the 22.57 seconds standard.
Tracey, who ran a season’s best 2:00.24 minutes in Madrid at the weekend, is chasing the automatic qualifying time of 1:59.00.
Bryan Levell will line up in the men’s 100m where it is expected his biggest threat will be Austrian record holder Markus Fuchs, while Kadrian Goldson and Delano Kennedy are set to contest the men’s 200m.
Tyler Mason will contest the 110m hurdles during which Simon Ehammer, who lowered the Swiss national record last week, will start as favourite to win.
At the Tampere Motonet GP Meeting in Tampere, Finland, Taylor will continue his chase for the men’s 200m qualifying time in the World Athletics Continental Tour-Bronze event.
Taylor, who was second at the recent national championships in a personal best 20.28 seconds, is looking to get to 20.16 seconds to join Levell and Adrian Kerr in the event at the World Championships.
South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile and Puerto Rico’s Jose Figueroa are expected to be his main rivals.
Assinie Wilson will contest the men’s 400m hurdles inm which he will face Kemorena Tisang of Botswana and Michele Bertoldo of Italy, while LaFranz Campbell will line up in the 110m hurdles race against Jacob McCorry of Australia, Rafael Pereira of Brazil, and Santeri Kuusiniemi of Finland.
Briana Williams will contest the women’s 200m during which she will face off with Shirley Nekhubui of South Africa, Lukrecija Sabaityte of Lithuania, and Gloria Hooper of Italy.
Red-hot Jordan Scot, fresh off a win in Madrid on Saturday, will be going after an eighth-straight win when he contests the men’s triple jump at the International Pegaso Meeting Citta Di Firenze, in Italy.
Bermuda’s Jah-nhai Perinchief, and Turkiye’s Can Ozupek are also down to take part.
Imani Oliver will contest the women’s triple jump in which she will meet Cuba’s Davisleydi Velazco.
