Bobby Floyd strong on Your Love Is Amazing
Four years ago, Bobby Floyd decided it was time for a change of pace after over 50 years in the music business.
He became a Christian and a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Recently, the St Mary-based singer returned to the recording booth for a cover of Your Love Is Amazing, a song originally done by The Four Tops, but made famous in Jamaica by Delroy Wilson and Errol Dunkley.
His version, produced by Clovis Forde, was released in March.
“As a yute yuh used to listen certain singer, an’ Delroy, especially, was one of my favourite. Dis is a song wi always love and wi finally get to do it,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Bobby Floyd and the Florida-based Forde have been friends since the 1970s. At that time, they lived in the Duhaney Park community of St Andrew and regularly discussed music.
He started his career in the late 1960s and had stints with the Soul Syndicate Band and harmony trio, The Immortals. As a solo act, he recorded songs for producers Niney Holness, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Sly and Robbie.
Your Love Is Amazing, Forde’s first song as a producer, features saxophonist Dean Fraser and Anbesa Tafari on violin.
Love Without Feeling, Bobby Floyd’s best-known single, was produced by the latter and released in 1982.
Shortly after, he migrated to the United States and continued to record songs for producers, including Clement Dodd.
Bobby Floyd returned to Jamaica 20 years ago, but gradually became disillusioned with the music business.
“I just got tired of producers wanting you to record a song and then when yuh do it dem sit down on it and don’t release dem. I wanted something different and just start walk closer to God,” he said.
Bobby Floyd appears on two songs from Tribute EP, by singer Maria Baines, which was also released in March by Upstairs Music.
