Bob The Builder set for Jamaica Derby
Trainer Gregg Fennell has confirmed that his talented three-year-old colt, Bob The Builder, will line up for the 2025 Jamaica Derby on August 6. The colt’s recent win in the Terremoto Trophy on July 19 has given Fennell confidence in his chances.
Bob The Builder, a talented three-year-old colt, claimed his second career win from six starts in the Terremoto Trophy, a non-winners-of-two contest for three-year-olds run over 9½ furlongs. Ridden by Shane Ellis, Bob The Builder produced a thrilling performance, showcasing his speed and determination.
As the gates sprang open, Bob The Builder settled into a comfortable rhythm, sitting just off the pace behind Midnight Runner (Raddesh Roman) through the first turn and down the backstretch. Ellis expertly guided the colt, waiting for the perfect moment to make his move.
At the five-furlong marker, Ellis gave Bob The Builder rein, and the colt quickened smartly, pulling ahead of the field. However, in the closing stages, Bob The Builder began to show signs of tiring, which allowed Beneison, ridden by Phillip Parchment, to close in rapidly.
Despite the challenge, Bob The Builder’s determination and grit paid off, as he held on by half a length to secure the win.
Star Quest, ridden by Garvin Harris, trailed 12¼ lengths back in third. The winning time of 2:07.0 was a testament to the colt’s impressive speed and endurance.
“Saturday’s race was his final serious prep for the Derby. It also gave him more experience navigating two turns — valuable learning for him,” Fennell said.
Fennell is working to address Bob The Builder’s reluctance to change his lead leg, which has been an issue in previous races. Despite this, Fennell is optimistic about the colt’s chances in the Derby.
“We’re working to address that. We should be ready come Derby Day,” Fennell said.
The Jamaica Derby, run over 12 furlongs, will be a true test of Bob The Builder’s stamina and ability. With a strong performance in the Terremoto Trophy, the colt has shown promise, but Fennell has yet to decide on a jockey for the big event.
“Not yet,” Fennell said. “It’s still undecided and in flux. No jockey has been confirmed as of now.”
