Crucial video evidence advances larceny case
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The long-awaited video footage in the simple larceny case of Montego Bay resident Javel Gichie has finally been secured by the prosecution.
The video, which reportedly shows Gichie entering a taxi driver’s vehicle and allegedly stealing more than $10,000 in cash, now forms a key part of the case file before the St James Parish Court, allowing the matter to move forward after months of delay.
Gichie is charged with simple larceny in connection with an incident that occurred on February 28 near a busy gas station in Montego Bay. He denies the allegations and is currently out on bail. He is represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Dayes.
During Wednesday’s hearing the court clerk informed the court that the video footage had been received via WhatsApp, marking a significant development in the case. The footage reportedly shows Gichie entering the complainant’s black Toyota Voxy, providing the prosecution with visual evidence that had previously been lacking.
According to court documents, the taxi driver had briefly left his vehicle unlocked while stepping away to solicit passengers at the gas station. Upon his return he noticed that $12,000 in cash, which had been left inside the vehicle, was missing — reduced to just $1,650.
Following the driver’s report, an investigation led to Gichie’s arrest and subsequent charge.
Until the receipt of the video footage the prosecution had faced challenges in advancing the case without direct visual proof of the defendant’s involvement.
With this new evidence now officially on record, Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton set the trial date for October 13 and extended Gichie’s bail.
