Ian Spence’s resurgence: A timeless jockey
Ian “Dolly Baby” Spence, a veteran jockey, delivered a thrilling performance at Caymanas Park on July 19, 2025. At 60 years young, Spence showcased his enduring talent and guile, securing a remarkable double win — General Chief and Rideallday.
Aboard General Chief, Spence produced a masterful ride in the sixth event, an Optional Claiming ($350,000-$250,000) affair stretching over 6 furlongs (1,200 meters).
Off the pace and seemingly lost in traffic, Spence summoned the ghost of his younger self, urging General Chief into daylight and launching a ferocious drive to nip Musketoon (Jaheim Anderson) right on the line. The crowd erupted in cheers, acknowledging Spence’s skill and experience.
In the final event, the $1.25-million Bigman In Town Trophy, an Overnight Allowance at a mile (1,600m), Spence piloted the American-bred grey colt Rideallday, trained by Philip Feanny, to a convincing victory.
Breaking from the inside draw, Spence tucked in smartly behind the fleet-footed Mamma Mia (Eric Haughton), stalking every stride before making his move and surging to victory. This marked his first double win in 18 years, a testament to Spence’s dedication and timeless talent.
The double win was a poignant reminder of Spence’s enduring legacy in the world of horse racing. With eight wins from 36 rides this season, Spence continues to defy age and prove that class never fades. His story is one of passion, dedication, and a deep understanding of the sport, cementing his place as one of the greatest jockeys in racing history.
