Temporary closure of Charlton Avenue takes effect today
THE popular Charlton Avenue, which connects Shortwood and Constant Spring roads in St Andrew, will be closed to vehicular traffic for five weeks starting today.
The National Works Agency (NWA) says the closure is to facilitate the rehabilitation of the road.
According to the NWA, no through traffic will be allowed but single-lane access will be maintained for people who reside on the corridor or who have business there.
Manager of communication and customer services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the closure is necessary as the rehabilitative works will include reinforced concrete pavement along a section of the road.
He says the project, valued at $7.5 million, will also see the installation of kerb and channel (a barrier between the road pavement and the nature strip which provides road drainage and prevents water entering under the road surface) as well as hotmix patching.
According to Shaw, the rehabilitation will be under way for three months.
During the period of closure motorists will not be able to use Charlton Avenue to access other areas and will have to use alternative routes.
People who must use the corridor are being urged to exercise caution while travelling in the area and to obey instructions of posted warning signs.
