Funcaandun dazzles as DaCosta sweeps trophies
Trainer Jason DaCosta had an incredible day at the races, sweeping all three trophy races on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The highlight of his winners was Funcaandun, who produced a thrilling late burst to edge out Desert of Malibu by a short head in the $1.75-million She’s A Maneater Trophy.
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, Funcaandun sat patiently behind stablemate California Crown and Desert of Malibu before unleashing a powerful finish inside the final half-furlong to claim the win in 1:40.0 over one mile (1,600m).
DaCosta’s dominance didn’t stop there, as he also swept divisions 1 and 2 of the $1.25-million Donald Wehby Memorial Cup.
Prince Amaan, ridden by Halledeen, finished second behind Supremasi, in Division 1 of the Overnight Allowance contest over six furlongs (1,200m). However, he was promoted to first place after Supremasi was disqualified for causing interference. The winning time was 1:14.2.
In Division 2, Teflon Don made a decisive move to win the Overnight Allowance event over six furlongs (1,200m) by a length and three-quarters, with Cookie Day N Night and Mr Sensator finishing second and third, respectively, in 1:15.0.
Halledeen also had a triple as he won aboard Xylophonic Steel in the third race for trainer Khary Tucker.
The action continues with races on Friday and Saturday.
