I am writing on behalf of my neighbour in regard to some issues she is facing with JPS. She paid her JPS bill up to June 26, 2023. She then turned off her breaker and flew overseas for six months. Upon her return in January, 2024, she was told by JPS that she owed $114,823. She tried to query it and submitted documents with proof of her travel. The company told her that they were doing investigations. She has been making monthly payments since she returned to the island but the time she was away is still in question. When she went to a JPS office in Montego Bay, she was told that they are still investigating.

A debt collector for the JPS has also called her about the $114,823 the company claims she owes.

She will be travelling overseas again and would like to have it sorted out before she leaves.

Your assistance with this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Tell Claudienne has been in communication with the JPS on the matter. The column has received the following email from the director of government and regulatory relations at the JPS on the matter.

“Thank you for your patience while the matters you directed to my attention were reviewed. Due to the company’s policy on the confidentiality of customers’ account information as well as the provisions of the Data Protection Act, we are constrained in the level of specific details we can provide for publication and recommend similar restraint in publishing additional details and identification information that you may possess.

On the completion of a review, the account was adjusted in May 2024 for the period of estimation that was queried. The account now reflects a credit balance.”
