Tributes pour in following Don Wehby’s passing
Tributes are pouring in following the death of prominent business leader and former government minister Don Wehby.
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), where Wehby served in several leadership roles, including vice president and honorary treasurer, expressed sadness at his passing in a statement released on Sunday. The organisation described him as “a transformational business leader, a committed public servant, and long-standing friend and partner of the PSOJ.”
“We have lost a true titan of industry and a servant leader whose life’s work has left an indelible mark on Jamaica,” said PSOJ President Metry Seaga. “Don Wehby led with conviction, humility, and heart. His legacy will continue to shape both the PSOJ and the nation he served so faithfully.”
Wehby served as Group Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy Limited, where he played a leading role in transforming the company into a global brand while maintaining a strong focus on corporate social responsibility. His leadership helped expand youth development and sporting initiatives, most notably through the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships. In recognition of his contributions, Wehby was inducted into the PSOJ Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Wehby also had a distinguished record of public service, including two appointments to the Jamaican Senate and a term as Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance.
Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce joined national and corporate leaders in mourning Wehby’s passing, calling him “a leader of immense stature, but even greater heart.”
In a post to Instagram, Fraser-Pryce wrote:
“His fortitude, his fierce sense of purpose, and his unwavering commitment to exc
ellence were unmatched. He was a competitor in his own right — always striving to meet the high standards he set, not for personal gain, but for the benefit of others, for the good of Jamaica.”
She credited Wehby with being a mentor in both her business and personal life.
Both Fraser-Pryce and the PSOJ extended condolences to Wehby’s family, the GraceKennedy team, and all those affected by his passing.
