96 killed in 85 fatal crashes in April-June quarter says ITA
Ninety-six people have been killed in 85 fatal crashes as of the second quarter ending June 30, according to the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) in its second quarterly update for 2025.
According to the report which was released on Thursday, fatalities have increased by four per cent and fatal crashes are up six per cent when compared to the same quarter in 2024. The ITA said as at the second quarter, fatalities for the year are projected to increase by four per cent when compared with 2024.
During the quarter under review, motorcyclists accounted for 24 per cent or 23 fatalities. This was a 12 per cent decrease in fatalities for this group of road users when compared to prior year. Pedestrians accounted for 21 per cent of the overall death toll or 20 fatalities.
The ITA is also reporting that private motor vehicle passengers accounted for 20 per cent or 19 fatalities during the reporting period; private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 18 per cent or 17 fatalities; pedalcyclists accounted for eight per cent or eight fatalities.
Pillion passengers accounted for five per cent or five fatalities; while commercial motor vehicle passengers accounted for three per cent or three fatalities during the quarter. Significantly, there were no public passenger vehicle driver fatalities during the the second quarter. Public passenger vehicle driver fatalities have decreased by 100 per cent or four when compared with the 2024 quarter. And there were no public passenger vehicle passenger fatalities during the period according to the ITA.
Three children and 23 elderly persons died in road crashes during the quarter. Tragically, elderly fatalities increased by 283 per cent during the three-month period. Overall, males and females accounted for 89 per cent and eleven per cent respectively of those killed on the nation’s roads in the second quarter.
