Dane Nelson scores four wins in two days at Century Mile, extends championship lead
Dane “Warrior Chief” Nelson’s recent four-timer over the two days of racing at Century Mile in Edmonton, Canada, has significantly boosted his chances in the jockeys’ championship. The Jamaican jockey’s winning rides on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26, 2025, showcased his exceptional talent and partnership with top trainers.
On Friday, Nelson started strong by guiding Lil Miss Addy, trained by Gonzalo Anderson, to victory in the fifth race, covering 4.5 furlongs in 53.0 seconds.
The pair repeated their winning formula later that day in the eighth race with Sir Bergovic, taking the 6.5 furlong contest by a neck in 1:10.2.
On Saturday, July 26, Nelson continued his winning streak by piloting Kulsum, trained by James Brown, to a neck victory in the 7 furlong race, clocking 1:24.2.
Nelson’s four-timer was sealed in the eighth race aboard Smooth Sicario, trained by Anderson, in the 1 mile and 70 yards contest.
Smooth Sicario delivered an impressive performance, winning by 2 ¾ lengths in 1:42.2.
“I’m thrilled with my performance over the weekend. The horses were all prepared well by their trainers, and it was a matter of putting them in the right spot at the right time. I’m grateful for the opportunity to ride such talented horses and look forward to more success,” Nelson told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
With these wins, Nelson took his tally for the season to 28, further solidifying his lead in the jockeys’ standings. He now holds a 7-win advantage over Rasheed Hughes and Leithton Natera, who are tied for second place with 21 wins each.
“Maintaining this lead won’t be easy, but I’m focused on taking it one race at a time. I’ll continue to work hard and give my best every time I ride,” Nelson said.
